I've been looking for news regarding Live Mesh for quite some time. I previously switched to Live Mesh from LogMeIn Free. My initial thought was, "Finally Microsoft has got something right!".

My first impression was that Microsoft was going to be offering Live Mesh as a platform through which users could store files online, sync folders across computers and even allow full remote access with copy/paste capabilities across all of the computer devices added to the Mesh. They would then improve on this to make it much more stable, before adding the ability to purchase additional web applications and/or services. This sort of approach would have been taken straight out of the Google "How To Dominate" handbook and to tell the Truth, I was finally excited about Microsoft again.

As it turns out Microsoft hasn't learned much in the last few years. Judging by this article they have reverted back to their usual ways. Live Mesh was such a promising service. I know of many people who use it that were waiting for the next major update. Some even believed a true smart phone/iPhone app would be developed as well. As it turns out Microsoft has squandered another great opportunity. Who do these guys have working for them anyways?!?

Live Mesh is now dead to me. I've been looking for an alternative. Perhaps Google might develop something similar to this. Or maybe I'll just have to go back to LogMeIn.

i do remember reading on many sites that Microsoft will be splitting windows mobile into 2 versions in the future.. kinda like windows 7 has home, premium, bus, ultimate.. basically there will be a consumer phone we see here and then there will be a business phone late which i would expect to look much like 6.5 or what 6.5 is going to become. i don't really know i just read about this and came across your site today.

I've been using Live Mesh and found it a valuable tool. I prefer the local/cloud sync model esp where limited connectivity prevents a true cloud approach. Hope they turn the preview into something more solid but agree the lack of activity is not a good sign.

I take the opportunity to wish you happy holidays and to thank you for your excellent articles.

I wish that there is more snow in your area than we do. I ski in the Eastern Townships in Quebec, and we do not have much snow this year.

[...] There is nothing intuitive about setting up Mesh. It has enough flexibility to sync any folder on your computer but that comes with a price – non-tech types are confused by the nondescript Mesh blue folders, while everyone immediately understands a special folder named “My Dropbox.” [...]

Yup, you'd have access to the synced Jungle Disk files through a web browser. You'd have to download a file, work on it, then upload it again, all through the browser, but it definitely works.

Don't overlook LogMeIn, which works like a charm for free to give you access to your office computer from anywhere. It's a slightly different approach to the problem but it's a lifesaver. http://www.brucebnews.com/2009/05/logmein-pro-remote-access/ The office computer would have to be running for LogMeIn to work; files synced with Jungle Disk would be available online regardless of what the office computer was doing. Use both!
